I need help with hobby things! Trains and stuff. ?

I want to build a landscape with trains and slot cars but I need to know some basics. What do the different sizes of trains mean(HO ect.). What is a good website for all of the stuff and how do I start? Thank so for your help.

Here is one site that has some gauges and their size on it but a real craft store if you called or a toy store could probably explain the sizes so you’d understand them better.

Ho gauge is a small to mid sized train. The box car measures 6 7/8" long and the gauge is the distance between the track rails.
